Senior Product Engineer

Good Trouble was founded with a simple idea: what if the games industry invited ALL gamers to play? We're on a mission to help build a new hyper-accessible future for the games industry, and that starts with empowering both gamers and studios alike.

Founded in 2023 and trusted by thousands of gamers, studios, and (surprisingly!) healthcare professionals, Good Trouble is setting the new standard for games accessibility. We push boundaries, build with speed and intensity, and consistently deliver game-changing value to our customers. We're a team of good troublemakers, united by shared values, and a desire to change the industry for the better.

What's the opportunity?

At Good Trouble, you'll be a Senior Product Engineer - someone who solves real accessibility challenges in game development at scale through efficient and impactful application of your technical knowledge. You'll be part of one of our multidisciplinary product teams, where you will primarily build robust back-end infrastructure and systems, while maintaining comfort with front-end development, and work closely with senior leadership and accessibility researchers.

We're facing many exciting scaling challenges as we build robust accessibility technology where your expertise can be applied to areas such as real-time audio processing, visual accessibility APIs, input adaptation systems, compliance reporting, platform integrations, and machine learning for accessibility automation, to name a few.

What will I be doing?

As a Senior Product Engineer you will:

  • Lead technical architecture decisions and contribute to our technical strategy as we scale our accessibility platform.

  • Design and build robust backend infrastructure that powers Good Trouble's accessibility technology stack, including APIs, data processing pipelines, and integration systems.

  • Ship a change to production on day-1, and ship your first feature deployment in week-1.

  • Build scalable backend systems that directly contribute to how studios build accessible games, while maintaining frontend capabilities for full-stack development.

  • Join team research sessions with game studios to understand their accessibility implementation challenges and architect solutions that fit seamlessly into their development workflows.

  • Lead and mentor other engineers, drive technical decisions, and play a key role in interviewing candidates. This is a chance to be an integral part of building and growing a team that's changing the games industry.

What skills do I need?

  • 5+ years of industry experience in a software engineering role, preferably building a SaaS product.

  • You can demonstrate significant impact that your work has had on the product and/or the team.

  • Strong backend infrastructure experience with languages like Python, Node.js, Go, or similar, with expertise in building scalable APIs, data processing systems, and cloud architecture.

  • Frontend comfort and familiarity with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern frameworks - you don't need to be a frontend expert, but you should be comfortable working across the full stack as part of collaborating with the team.

  • Experience collaborating directly with product teams and designers, and a proven track record of delivering value to customers or users.

  • Deep experience with web-based SaaS platforms, APIs, and distributed systems.

  • Leadership experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical decision-making.

  • Understanding of accessibility principles and standards is a plus.

What happens when I apply?

First, apply so we can review your application. As the next step, we will send you a take-home test to work on in your own time - this will involve building a small hypothetical feature with both frontend and backend components. Next, you will do a video interview with one or both of Good Trouble's Co-Founders, which will focus on technical skills, architectural thinking, and culture contribution questions. The final step is a virtual onsite interview where you'll meet the broader team and lead deeper technical architecture discussions.
