Product Engineer

Good Trouble was founded with a simple idea: what if the games industry invited ALL gamers to play? We're on a mission to help build a new hyper-accessible future for the games industry, and that starts with empowering both gamers and studios alike.

Founded in 2023 and trusted by thousands of gamers, studios, and (surprisingly!) healthcare professionals, Good Trouble is setting the new standard for games accessibility. We push boundaries, build with speed and intensity, and consistently deliver game-changing value to our customers. We're a team of good troublemakers, united by shared values, and a desire to change the industry for the better.

What's the opportunity?

At Good Trouble, you'll a Product Engineer - someone who solves real accessibility challenges in game development at scale through efficient and impactful application of your technical knowledge. You'll be part of one of our multidisciplinary product team, where you will build both back-end and front-end systems, and work closely with senior leadership and accessibility researchers.

What will I be doing?

As an experienced Product Engineer you will:

  • Develop detailed technical plans and contribute to our technical architecture as we scale our accessibility platform.

  • Write clean, efficient code that powers Good Trouble's accessibility technology stack, focused on web-based interfaces.

  • Ship a change to production on day-1, and ship your first feature deployment in week-1.

  • Build features that directly contribute to how studios build accessible games.

  • Join team research sessions with game studios to understand their accessibility implementation challenges and build solutions that fit seamlessly into their development workflows.

  • Grow your team's capacity by mentoring other engineers and interviewing candidates. This is a chance to be an integral part of building and growing a team that's changing the games industry.

What skills do I need?

  • 3+ years of industry experience in a software engineering role, preferably building a SaaS product.

  • You can clearly demonstrate significant impact that your work has had on the product and/or the team.

  • Deep knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and JAMstack applications.

  • Experience collaborating directly with product teams and designers, and a proven track record of delivering value to customers or users. Engineers at Good Trouble are pragmatists who work closely with others.

  • Experience with web-based SaaS platforms and APIs.

  • Understanding of accessibility principles and standards (WCAG, Section 508, etc.) is a plus.

  • Bonus: Experience with game development, game engines (Unity, Unreal, etc.), or assistive technologies.

What happens when I apply?

First, apply so we can review your application. As the next step, we will send you a short take-home test to work on in your own time - this will involve building a small example feature for a hypothetical scenario. Next, you will do a video interview with one or both of Good Trouble's Co-Founders, which will focus on technical skills and culture contribution questions. The final step is a virtual onsite interview where you'll meet the broader team and dive deeper into technical architecture discussions.
